The situation

An affiliate site comparing foreign sportsbooks and casinos for Greek players. In March 2026 traffic stepped down twice, on the 24th and again on the 27th: the spam update and the core update, back to back. Clicks on the money page went from around 30 a day to low single digits, and average position slid from 30 to the high 60s.

The damage scan found 171 losing pages: 69 sportsbook reviews, 67 casino reviews, the rest education, bonus and prediction content. Of the clicks lost, 44% were on the listicle queries the money pages exist for, and 62% on operator brand queries. One operator review alone accounted for 32% of the loss.

What I did

Diagnosis before anything else: a GSC comparison of pages and queries either side of the drop, bucketed by the day each page stepped down so the spam-update losses could be separated from the core-update losses.

Then a deep content analysis and a link analysis, including the affiliate links themselves. That is where the cause was: every operator call-to-action was a JavaScript button whose destination never appeared in the HTML. To Google the site listed 62 operators and linked to none of them, sitewide, which reads as cloaking to the spam systems. The fix was a template change: real anchors to on-domain redirects, marked nofollow sponsored, with the destination verified in the crawled HTML.

With the cause removed, the rest was structural. Cannibalisation: operators reviewed twice, once under the sportsbook directory and once under casino, were merged into one canonical review each and the weaker URL redirected. A content-gap analysis against the pages holding the top positions produced a new page structure for the money page (tiered operator cards, comparison data on the listicle itself, a quick top-five above the fold, licensing as a first-class section, the author byline moved to the top) and a new review template led by whatever intent the SERP showed for each brand.

A low-hanging-fruit analysis set the order of the rewrites, new content went into the money page and the review pages first, and internal links from both listicles were pointed at the single canonical review per operator. The page-level link profile, 40 referring domains against a SERP floor of 54 to 1,098, got its own plan.

What happened

Work started on 29 April. Ahrefs shows the daily organic traffic climbing in steps through May and June, peaking at 1.2K in August and holding around 900 at the start of September, against a line that had sat under 300 since the drop.

The recovery, read in Ahrefs. The marker is the day the work started; the line was flat under 300 before it and peaked at 1.2K in August.Ahrefs · organic traffic · daily · 8 Mar – 1 Sep 2026

What this proved

  1. Affiliate links hidden in JavaScript buttons strip the commercial signal from every page at once, and can read as cloaking to Google's spam systems. A template fix is the whole recovery on a site built that way.
  2. One review URL per operator. Two directories reviewing the same brand split the equity and neither page wins the brand query.
  3. Recovery work is sequenced: cause first, cannibalisation second, then structure, content and links. The order is what makes the outcome attributable.
